The bookcase is an aspect of a study of the production of objects at a low construction cost, where assembly can be carried out by simple means. For the construction of the frame, the use of standardised sections of aluminium was chosen, while rivets were used for the joints. Initially, the shelves were made with plywood. Then the construction of a variant entirely made out of aluminium was tried. In this version, an attempt was made to solve the problem of the bookend by replacing the lateral component of the frame. The third variation brought back the plywood as the material for the shelves, while the role of the lateral joints - bookends was taken by panels of Plexiglass. The logic of the assembly of the design and the structural properties of the aluminium produced lightweight forms with an impressive capacity for taking the weight of the books, while the deliberate absence of finishing gave them the desired ruggedness. |
